Setsubun (Mame-maki, or bean-throwing)


   Setsubun falls on either the 3rd or 4th of February. According to the old lunar calendar of Japan,Setsubun is the day which divides the two season:winter and spring. This is the day to exorcise evils, such as the demons of ill-health or disasters. People scatter roasted beans inside and outside the house and shout the words "Fortune in,devils out !" Beans have been used as a charm against demons since ancient times.
   People eat as many beans as their age The purpose is to pray for good health and good fortune for the year.
